Chapter Thirteen

Thea

He's walking away, but I'm not ready for him to go just yet.

I touch my fingers to my tingling lips, then reach for his hand. As I lace my fingers with his, he turns to face me. There's an unexpected warmth in his eyes, a kindness that I don't remember seeing before. Now that I know a bit more about his story, I understand that he's been through a lot.

I want to tell him that his daughter's dislike of him feels unfair. Being an adult means that relationships are difficult and, given what his late wife did to him, I can completely understand where he's coming from and why he feels nothing for her.

“I'm sorry you've been through so much.” I want to validate him, to make him feel seen and heard. “It's hard to learn that you've been cheated on. It's hard to lose someone suddenly and unexpectedly, even if your relationship isn't on good terms. And it's even harder to be blamed for that by a child who doesn't understand the complexity of the situation.”

Therein lies the crux of the issue. “She's just a kid, she doesn't understand. She will probably understand better when she gets older, though.” Maybe my words will just be minimal comfort, but if they provide any comfort at all, I count it as a win.

“Thank you for that.” His deep voice makes my heart pound and I pull him into a hug. Internally I battle with all the things I'm feeling about his life and can't imagine how he must feel being the one to go through all the heartache and heartbreak.

“You'll get through this.”

He squeezes me before letting go. “I'm grateful that you came into my life and that you're here now.”

The way he's looking into my eyes warns me that things might be getting out of hand. Warmth flutters deep in my belly and my heart is beating in a strange rhythm. Now that I understand him better, I realize that his past is probably the reason he's so rough around the edges. Maybe he's not actually mean or rude, or any of the other issues that the other nannies had with him, maybe he's just dealing with a hard past and a harsh life.

I'd always thought that having money would make life easy, but now I know money doesn't solve everything. Sure, he'd tried therapy. He'd tried having his daughter do therapy, and that hadn't helped. And I have no doubt he has access to some of the best professionals in the industry. If they couldn't help fix his problems, then I can't imagine how alone he feels in this battle.

“I guess we should probably both be getting to bed.” I say the words carefully, hoping that they don't sound like an invitation, even though I'd like nothing more.

With that thought, I try to internally put on the brakes. I can't let a few warm feelings upend my better judgment. I don't want to jeopardize our working relationship and I don't want him to have a reason to fire me.
